Wedding Cards Vs. Online Wedding Invitations – Pros & Cons

If you are one of those couples who are going through the Wedding cards vs. Online wedding Invitations debate, here’s a quick look for you at the pros and cons of both the options.

The debate about whether to get old school printed invitations for one’s wedding or to go for the new age online wedding invitations doesn’t seem to be getting old any time soon! One of the most important aspects of your wedding, and often one that ends up getting relatively lesser attention in all the innumerable wedding-related things, is your wedding card. What used to be a fairly simple process until a few years back, with very few available options, and only one medium, has become a complicated space now with so many options and so many available mediums that it often ends up really confusing the couple about what they should choose.

Pros:

  1. They are elaborate, can contain more information depending on the size and number of pamphlets you choose, and there is definitely the idea of the tangible feel of the print and the paper.

  2. In a lot of cultures in our country, wedding cards are first blessed in a ritual and marked with something auspicious like roli or turmeric before sending them off, and this can be only done with physical cards.

  3. They serve as a legal, formal document to get your marriage registered.

  4. Some people, especially older relatives, are not familiar enough with technology to appreciate online wedding invitations yet. They feel more comfortable with physical invites.

  5. They make excellent keepsakes to remember your wedding by.

Cons:

  1. Physical cards are way more expensive than online wedding invitations. The cost of printing, envelopes, stickers, plastic covers and postage etc are all add ons, along with the cost of transportation of the cards in bulk.

  2. With thousands of other urgent things that exponentially build up as the wedding approaches, it becomes more and more difficult to hand out cards physically, and as a result, many cards end up wasted. That’s a lot of wastage we don’t want in these times when we are talking about saving the environment.

  3. They don’t hold as much value to people who are not close to you, and those you are extending courtesy invite to. To determine who all qualify to be invited to your wedding, read this.

  4. Keeping a track of the RSVPs will need a separate system and maintenance.

  5. Inadvertent printing/grammatical errors in this day and age will go down with your card into the annals of eternity. There is no way to rectify those in case of physical cards. We all know we have seen really embarrassing printing mistakes in wedding cards, that often escape notice because of the thousand other things you also have to take care of in your wedding.

Online Wedding Invitations:

Pros:

  1. Eco Friendly, and zero waste option.

  2. Easily customisable, both in terms of graphics and content, which gives you much more control over exactly how you want your online wedding invitation to be. Can be as compact and as detailed as you want. Also, any sneaky print/grammatical error can be immediately rectified.

  3. Are extremely cost-effective and pocket friendly. Even the most expensive ones with customised illustrations and animations will cost you less than their physical counterparts. Add no overhead packaging and posting costs to that and you have a pretty good bargain there.

  4. Can be integrated with features like RSVP tracker, maps, guestbook and photo sharing platforms on a wedding invitation website like this.

  5. Easily accessible for everyone, since all the information on the card can be accessed by the invitees on their smartphones.

Cons:

  1. Older relatives might not be very comfortable with the format, although that’s been changing with online wedding invitations becoming more and more common now.

  2. The nostalgia and the vintage charm of paper and print is a little difficult to translate into the digital medium, although printable e-invites that bridge this gap are becoming quite popular.

  3. They might be considered informal by some people since they are a relatively newer trend in India.
